Valve also provide the Steam Runtime, but it's glibc 2.15 based and either requires steam or for the user to pull in around 100 mb of libraries, so I can't really recommend it for things that aren't on steam. I have an ubuntu 10.04 build server for this, and Red Hat/CentOS/Scientific Linux 6 is also quite popular. Probably the most common and compatible solution is to find an old linux distro and compile on that. The rough rule of thumb is to target glibc 2.13 or older (to match debian stable), though valve notably use glibc 2.15, so if you're distributing on steam, that's pretty safe.
Basically, you'll need to target an older version of glibc. This is one of the nastier aspects of Linux game development, and there aren't any really easy, convenient solutions to it.
